In continuation of my Confidential Despatch of
the 26th. April, I have the honour to transmit the enclosed copy
of translation of a letter addressed by the Commissioner for Foreign
Affairs at Canton to His Britannic Majesty's Consul-General there
on the subject of the claim of the Green Island Cement Company for
compensation for loss incurred owing to the embargo on the export
of limestone.
The letter shows no desire to settle the claim
and I do not think that the Authorities at Canton ever had the
least intention of arriving at any settlement involving the re-
-opening of the supply of stone to the Hongkong Company.
I have sent copy of this Despatch to His
Majesty's Minister at Peking.
